Limits of Psychiatric Knowledge; Importance of Patient/Carer Constructs

A recent journal article in “Social Theory & Health” entitled “Contemporary public perceptions of psychiatry: some problems for mental health professions” explains that, “Social movements led by service users/survivors [aka patients/clients] have worked to contest biomedical models whilst carer groups [aka some clinicians] have campaigned for a greater emphasis on biomedicine.”

It in turn concludes that “Professional mental health workers… need to be transparent about the assumptions and limitations of psychiatric knowledge and base therapeutic decisions around the way in which service users and carers construct mental disorder.”
