This post in psychologist Alan Godwin’s “The Drama Review” series is originally entitled, “Shifty Manipulators and Their Corrupting Effects”. It is most interesting and insightful, depicting via the story of It’s a Wonderful Life the risk of selling your soul (he didn’t use that expression) and the challenge of standing on principle, and the people who would try to lure you into doing these things.
Also of incidental interest in the post is the fact that George Bailey is played by Jimmy Stewart in the movie, and Jimmy actually was engaging himself in this role as part of his post-WWII PTSD recovery strategy.
