Unless I have their permission, any information that I have about clients will not be released to anyone, but this is not without exceptions:
Legal and ethical codes state that in rare circumstances, Registered Psychotherapists (and all “mandated reporters” such as psychologists, social workers, etc.) can or must share information with certain others (e.g., Children’s Aid Society, family doctor, police, etc.) , even if we don’t have your consent. Some examples of such circumstances include: if based on what a client says, I am reasonably concerned about risk of serious bodily harm to a client or someone else; or, if there is suspicion of child abuse of any type — physical, sexual, emotional, neglect.
Confidentiality will be further explained and discussed during an initial “informed consent” process before you decide to pursue psychotherapy services. If you proceed, this informed consent process continues. I take informed consent very seriously as well as my duties as a mandated reporter.
